Customer Reviews: Average Rating:

Rating : - Rather Disappointing -
Steve Jobs is this issue's feature - he's named CEO of the Decade based on his rescue of Apple (in terrible shape as the new millennia opened), and radically reinventing the music, movie, computer, and telecommunications industries. Fortune points out that remaking four industries is unheard of. Apple was worth about $5 billion in 2000, now is at $170 billion, with $34 billion in cash.(Disney paid $7.5 billion in 2006 to acquire Pixar, which had won 6 Oscars.) (In the three years the iPod/iTunes combination became a nearly $10 billion product, accounting for almost 50% of Apple's revenue. HBR, 12/08) Early in this decade Jobs had the computer and monitor combined in the Mac, along with cost-cutting to create Apple's return to financial health.

Jobs is well-known for both his big-picture thinking and micromanagement - eg. design of Apple's operating system and hardware, as well as advertising material. Another relatively new step is Apple's adding retail sales locations (275 in 9 countries). About 220 million iPods have been sold, along with 8.5 billion in sales via album-killing iTunes (since 2003). iPhone sales have reached 30 million, and has a reported 55,000+ applications available for users - including books, maps.

Jobs also was co-founder of Apple in 1976, though booted from it in 1986. Early this year he received a life-saving liver transplant.

My issue is not whether Jobs deserves such accolades, but that Fortune didn't provide enough detail on his interesting and impressive achievements. Too much space was taken up by many 'big-picture' graphics.
